Cribbage can be a fun game once you get the hang of it. There are a few things that you can do to help you improve your cribbage game.
1. Lead your Opponent
Leading your opponent is a great way to earn a couple points. For example if you have 2 4s in your hand you can put down one of the 4s. If your opponent has a 4 as well they will put it down and score 2 points by having a pair.
Then you can put down your 4 and score 6 points by getting 3 in a row. Leading doesn’t always work, but when it does it can be a very good thing, and make you feel smart too.
2. Discard High Cards in the Crib
When you discard to the crib discard your high cards, you want to be playing with mostly low cards if you can. Playing with high cards works against you because you cannot lay down more than 31 points on each round.
So, if you have a hand full of nothing but 10 point cards you will probably only be able to put down 2 cards before you have to stop and let your opponent finish it off.
Remember you get points for being the last person to play a card and the lower your cards are the more likely that will be you.
3. Keep Aces
Aces count as 1 point so they work in your favor in two ways. Chances are if you save it you will be able to use it as a last card. Also your opponent might make the score 30 thinking that they will get points for last card. That would help you put the Ace down and score 31 which would give you a bonus.
4. Don’t Open with a 5
If you open with a 5 chances are your opponent will have a 10 point card play it and get 15, which would give them extra points. There are a lot of 10 point cards in the deck, so it is better to assume your opponent has one.
